Abstract

Background and Objectives: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of 12 weeks of intense endurance training and bee pollen consumption on
ABCA1 gene expression in small intestine, liver and gastrocnemius muscle tissues of male rats.
Methods: In this study, 24 male Wistar rats (aged 6-8 weeks and weighing 90-110 g) were randomly divided into four groups of saline-control (n=6), saline-training (n=6), bee pollen-control (n=6) and bee pollen-training (n=6). The training groups exercised on a treadmill for 12 weeks (30 m/min, 90 min/day, five days/week). The bee pollen groups were given bee pollen orally (500 mg/Kg) for 12 weeks. Data were analyzed using two-way ANOVA at significance level of 0.05.
Results: ABCA1 gene expression was highest in the liver, gastrocnemius muscle and small intestine, respectively. The findings also revealed that the intense endurance training caused a non-significant increase in
ABCA1 gene expression in the small intestine and liver. However, the training caused a non-significant decrease in
ABCA1 gene expression in the gastrocnemius muscle. In addition, consumption of bee pollen significantly increased
ABCA1 gene expression in the small intestine and gastrocnemius muscle of male rats. However, the effect of bee pollen on the gene’s expression in the liver was not statistically significant.
Conclusion: Based on our findings, it can be concluded that consumption of bee pollen has more beneficial effects on the
ABCA1 gene expression and reverse cholesterol transport compared with the intense endurance training.

Abstract
ABSTRACT
Background and Objectives: Tonsils are lymphoid tissues that can be affected in various diseases. In some cases, it is necessary to remove tonsils through surgery. Although the diseases are often diagnosed by history-taking and physical examination that proceeds with surgery, histologic examination is necessary for confirmed diagnosis of malignancy. Considering the low prevalence of tonsil cancer, this study was performed to clinically examine tonsils for malignancies and evaluate the necessity of histopathological examination.
Methods: This retrospective study was conducted on 2,232 patients (aged 2-80 years) who had undergone tonsillectomy for various reasons in the city of Gorgan from 2001 to 2012. Medical history was obtained and physical examination was carried out before surgery. All the obtained samples were sent to the laboratory for histopathological examination. Finally, the collected data was analyzed.
Results: Only one case of lymphoma was found among the 2,232 patients investigated in this study. This 80-year-old woman with preoperative cervical lymphadenopathy and unilateral tonsillar enlargement went under tonsillectomy for confirmed diagnosis.
Conclusion: Considering the high frequency of tonsillectomy and the low possibility of malignancy, and the fact that malignancy is often seen in individuals with obvious clinical presentations such as in our case, it is recommended to limit referral of specimens for histological examination to highly suspicious cases through more rational decision-making and summarization of other findings.

Abstract
ABSTRACT
Background and Objectives: Acinetobacter baumannii is an opportunistic pathogen associated with nosocomial infections. Treatment of infections caused by this bacterium has become challenging due to increasing rate of resistance to a wide range of antibiotics such as carbapenems. One of the main mechanisms of resistance to carbapenems is the production of carbapenemase. The objective of this study was to evaluate antibiotic resistance patterns and frequency of carbapenemase-producing A. baumannii strains using the CarbAcineto NP Test.
Methods: In this descriptive cross-sectional study, 130 A. baumannii isolates were collected from clinical specimens of teaching hospitals in Zahedan in 2016. After determining the antibiotic resistance patterns, all A. baumannii isolates were examined using the phenotypic method of CarbAcineto NP test to evaluate production of carbapenemase enzymes.
Results: Based on the antibiogram results, more than 90% of the isolates were resistant to the antibiotics tested in this study. However, the lowest rate of resistance was observed against colistin, minocycline, tigecycline and doxycycline, respectively. Based on the results of the CarbAcineto NP test, 96% of carbapenem-resistant strains were positive for the production of carbapenemases.
Conclusion: Due to the high resistance of A. baumannii to carbapenems, they are not currently suitable for the treatment of infections caused by this bacterium. However, since most carbapenem-resistant strains are susceptible to colistin, minocycline, tigecycline, and doxycycline, these antibiotics or their combination are recommended for the treatment of the infections caused by the resistant strains. Rapid identification of carbapenemase-producing bacteria using efficient methods such as CarbAcineto NP test is essential to prevent their spread, particularly in hospitals.

Abstract
ABSTRACT
Background and Objectives: Diarrheagenic Escherichia coli (DEC) pathotypes are important causes of diarrhea among children in developing countries. The objective of this study was to determine the frequency and antibiotic resistance pattern of DEC pathotypes in children aged less than 10 years.
Methods: This cross-sectional study was done on 300 E. coli strains isolated from diarrheic stool samples of children aged less than 10 years who were admitted to hospitals and central laboratory in Zahedan, between July and October 2016. DEC pathotypes were identified by standard biochemical testing and phenotypic testing using polyvalent antiserums. Antibiotic resistant pattern of these strains was evaluated against 11 different antibiotics by the agar disk diffusion method according to the Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute guidelines.
Results: Of the 300 E. coli isolates, 89 (29.6%) were found positive for DEC using polyvalent antiserums. In this study, 35 cases (39.3%) reacted with antiserum 1, 21 cases (25.8%) reacted with the antiserum 2, and 31 cases (34.8%) reacted with antiserum 3. The highest rate of resistance was observed against ampicillin (94.8%), tetracycline (87.2%), and co-trimoxazole (70.5%). In addition, the lowest rate of resistance was related to imipenem (1%) and ciprofloxacin (8.9%).
Conclusion: DEC pathotypes are the important causes of diarrhea among children admitted to hospitals of Zahedan. Considering the high rate of antibiotic resistance among these pathotypes in this region, prescription of antibiotics should be based on accurate detection of these strains.

Abstract
ABSTRACT
Background and Objectives: Keratinase is an enzyme commonly used in the production of detergents, cosmetics, drugs, leather, and other industries. Considering the high cost of traditional methods for decomposition of feather, hair, hooves, nails, and wool that contain high levels of keratin, their biodegradation with keratinase-producing bacteria can be a valuable solution. The present study aimed for isolation and molecular identification of keratinase-producing bacteria in Qeshm Island and Peyposht village in Iran.
Methods: Water and sludge samples from the Qeshm Island and Peyposht village were collected. The bacteria isolates were screened for keratinase production using the Lowry method. Effect of pH and temperature was assessed on the production of keratinase and on the growth of the isolates. Colony-polymerase chain reaction was used for molecular identification of the isolates.
Results: Bacillus berevis and Enterobacter cloacae were isolated in this study. Keratinase production in B. berevis was highest at pH 7.5 and 35 °C. In addition, the highest level of enzyme production by E. cloacae was observed at pH 7 and 37 °C.
Conclusion: It seems that the bacterial strains isolated from sludge in the study area have relatively favorable keratinase production capacity.

Abstract

Background and Objectives: The resistance of gram-negative bacteria to antibiotics has become a serious problem, which imposes a significant increase in treatment costs. Klebsiella pneumoniae is an important nosocomial pathogen from the Enterobacteriaceae family. The aim of this study was to investigate the frequency and pattern of antibiotic resistance in K. pneumoniae strains isolated from clinical samples.
Methods: This descriptive, cross-sectional study was performed on 150 K. pneumonia strains isolated from different clinical samples such as urine, sputum, blood, ulcers, lung secretions and abdominal abscess. Antibiogram test was performed using the disk diffusion method (Kirby-Bauer). Minimum inhibitory concentration of amikacin, tobramycin and gentamicin was determined via the E-test for 50 strains with high resistance rates.
Results: In this study, the highest rate of resistance was observed against carbenicilin, ceftriaxone, cefepime and streptomycin. K. pneumonia isolates were most frequent in urine and sputum samples. In the E-test, the highest rate of resistance was observed against gentamicin, tobramycin (16µg/ml) and amikacin (64µg/ml).
Conclusion: Based on our results, tigecycline, netilmicin, kanamycin and amikacin are the most effective antibiotics for the treatment of K. pneumoniae infections.

Abstract

Background and objectives: Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) are major nanomaterials with a variety of applications. The synthesis of nanoparticles by conventional methods is challenging and often requires use of hazardous chemicals. Therefore, there is a growing need for development of environmentally and economically friendly processes for the synthesis of nanoparticles. This study aimed at biosynthesis of AgNPs using a filamentous fungus; Fusarium solani.
Methods: Twenty-four Fusarium isolates were found from several soil samples collected from depth of 1-10 cm. All isolates were identified as F. solani based on morphological characteristics. The synthesis of nanoparticles were evaluated after 24, 48, 72 hours of culture. AgNPs were characterized using UV-visible spectroscopy and transmission electron microscopy.
Results: The synthesized AgNps showed maximum absorbance peak at 420 nm after 72 hours. Moreover, most AgNps were spherical with diameter of between 20 and 40 nm.
Conclusion: In this study, we introduced a simple biological process for biosynthesis of AgNPs using F. solani isolates from soil samples. The results indicate that fungi may be suitable for safe and cost-effective production of AgNPs.

ABSTRACT
Colorectal cancer remains a leading cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. Most colorectal cancers begin as a growth of tissue called a polyp, some types of which can change into cancer over the course of several years. Angiogenesis, the formation of new blood vessels, is known to play a key role in the initiation, growth and progression of polyp and colorectal cancer. In this review, we discuss the mechanisms involved in colorectal cancer and polyp angiogenesis.

Abstract
ABSTRACT
Background and Objectives: Acinetobacter baumannii is an opportunistic pathogen that affects different groups of people, especially intensive care unit (ICU) patients. The prevalence of infections caused by this bacterium is very high. Today, prevalence of infections caused by multidrug-resistant (MDR) and extreme-drug resistant (XDR) strains is increasing. This study aimed to determine the antibiotic susceptibility pattern of A. baumannii isolates from ICU patients.
Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted from October 2014 to March 2015 on patients admitted to ICU of Imam Khomeini hospital in Tehran, Iran. Clinical samples of various sources were collected from patients. Isolates were detected and identified via microbiological and biochemical tests as well as PCR amplification of the blaOxa51 gene. Then, susceptibility testing was performed using the Kirby-Bauer disk diffusion test. Statistical analysis was performed with SPSS (version 22, Chicago, IL, USA) using Chi-square and Fisher’s exact tests.
Results: Of the total of 62 clinical samples, 24 (39%) were respiratory samples and only three (6%) were cerebrospinal fluid samples. Most MDR and XDR strains were isolated from respiratory samples. The highest resistance rate was against ceftriaxone, ticarcillin and erythromycin (100%), while the lowest resistance rate was against to minocycline (20%).
Conclusion: Owing to detection of high multi-drug resistance isolates in the present study, and importance of multi-drug resistance in A. baumannii, the identification of multi-drug resistance genes and their reporting to health care/treatment centers is important. Thus, it is recommended to perform susceptibility testing to help determine the most effective antibiotic(s) for the treatment of infections in ICU patients.

Abstract
ABSTRACT
Background and Objectives: Pseudomonas aeruginosa is a gram negative opportunistic pathogen and an important cause of wound infections and nosocomial infections. The purpose of this study was to study inhibitory effects of a new ointment prepared from medicinal plants against P. aeruginosa isolates.
Methods: In this study, an ointment called ZOUSH was prepared from mixing alcoholic extracts of Satureja khuzestaniea, Zataria multiflora, Mentha mozaffariani Jamzad, honey and polyurethane. Minimal inhibitory concentration of ZOUSH and its compositions alone or combined was determined using the disk diffusion method.
Results: S. khuzestaniea, Z. multiflora and Mentha mozaffariani Jamzad had inhibitory effects against P. aeruginosa. The ZOUSH ointment had greater antibacterial effects than the any of its compositions used solely or combined. The diameter of inhibition zone had a direct relationship with the concentration of the extracts. Moreover, the antibacterial effect of the ZOUSH ointment was identical to that of polymyxine B (300 µg).
Conclusion: We demonstrated that the ZOUSH ointment has inhibitory effects against P. aerugionosa. The inhibition zone diameter is directly correlated with the concentration of the extracts. Our results suggest that the ointment could be useful for treatment of burn wounds and skin infections.

Background and Objectives: Leptospirosis is a widespread zoonotic disease that is transmitted directly or indirectly from animals to humans. Humans mainly acquire pathogenic leptospires through mucosal or percutaneous exposure to environment contaminated with urine from an infected animal. We aimed to identify pathogenic leptospiral serovars by detection of the ompL37 gene using polymerase chain reaction (PCR).
Methods: Sixteen pathogenic leptospiral serovars and a saprophytic serovar, L. biflexa were cultured in modified semisolid Ellinghausen-McCullough-Johnson-Harris medium containing 5% rabbit serum. Genomic DNA extraction was done using the phenol-chlorophorm method. The ompL37 gene was amplified using specific primers. PCR products were analyzed by agarose gel electrophoresis.
Results: The ompL37 gene was amplified only in the pathogenic leptospiral serovars. We detected no amplified fragment for the saprophytic serovar.
Conclusion: Leptospirosis may be confused with other infectious diseases, and therefore, its early and accurate diagnosis is crucial. We showed that molecular detection of pathogenic leptospires based on the ompL37 gene could be used for laboratory diagnosis of leptospirosis.

Abstract

Background and Objectives: Apolipoprotein M (APOM) is a novel high-density lipoprotein (HDL)-associated protein involved in the production of pre-beta HDL and cholesterol efflux to HDL. The present study examined effect of 12 weeks of aerobic interval training on HDL-associated APOM levels.
Methods: Study population included 20 healthy men aged 20 to 24 years. The subjects were randomly and equally divided into a training group and a control group. Each training session included 10 minutes of warm-up, 35 minutes of aerobic training (5 combined cycles each including four minutes of running at intensity of 85-95% and an active resting period of treadmill running at 65-75% of maximum heart rate for 3 minutes) and 10 minutes of cool-down. Blood samples (10 mL) were taken every four weeks. Two-way ANOVA and Bonferroni's post hoc test were used to compare the groups. A P-value of less than 0.05 was considered statistically significant.
Results: At the end of the 12th week, HDL-associated APOM levels increased in the training group and decreased in the control group. However, these changes were not statistically significant (P>0.05).
Conclusion: This study demonstrated that the 12-week aerobic interval training does not significantly affect HDL-associated APOM levels. However, it is recommended to monitor subjects’ diet throughout the study period to reach a more comprehensive conclusion.

Abstract
ABSTRACT
Background and Objectives: Medicinal and aromatic plants are sources of natural antimicrobial compounds that could be useful replacements for antibiotics. The aim of this study was to assess antimicrobial activity of Crocus sativus stigma and Cinnamomum cassia extracts against some Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria.
Methods: Antimicrobial activity of methanolic and aqueous extracts of the plants was tested against clinical isolates of Klebsiella pneumonia, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli and Enterococcus using the microdilution method. Minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimum bactericidal concentration of each extract against the mentioned bacteria were also determined.
Results: The MIC of the methanolic extract of C. cassia was 80 µg/ml against Enterococcus, K. pneumonia and E. coli. The MIC of the methanolic extract of C. sativus was 160 µg/ml against Enterococcus and S. aureus. The minimum bactericidal concentration of the methanolic extracts of C. sativus and C. cassia was 320 µg/ml against K. pneumonia and 160 µg/ml against Enterococcus.
Conclusion: The extracts of C. sativus and C. cassia exhibit promising antibacterial activities against clinical isolates of the tested bacteria. Our results suggest that the extract of these plants can be further exploited as potential antibacterial agents against multi-drug resistant bacteria.

Abstract
ABSTRACT
Background and Objectives: Apolipoprotein O (apoO) is a 198 amino acids protein that exists predominantly in high-density lipoprotein (HDL). It may exert cardioprotective effects via decreasing fat accumulation and increasing removal of cholesterol from macrophages. Although the health benefits of exercise are well documented, no study has yet investigated the effects of various types of training, including resistance training on apoO level. Therefore, we aimed to determine effects of five weeks of circuit resistance training with different intensities on plasma levels of apoO, HDL, total cholesterol (TC) and triglyceride (TG) in young untrained men.
Methods: Forty-five age- and weight-matched healthy untrained men were randomly assigned to a control group (n=10) and four training groups: training at 20% intensity (n=9), training at 40% intensity (n=8), training at 60% intensity (n=7) and training at 80% intensity (n=8). The subjects performed circuit resistance training at 10 stations (30 seconds at each station) with three repetitions, without rest between stations and with 3-minute active rest between the repetitions. The training was carried out for 45 minutes per session, three sessions a week, for five weeks. Venous blood samples were taken 48 hours before the first exercise session and 48 hours after the last training session. Plasma levels of apoO, HDL, TC and TG were measured using commercial kits. Data were analyzed using repeated measures ANOVA and Tukey's post hoc test at significance level of 0.05.
Results: After the training intervention, mean plasma level of TC and TG did not differ significantly between the study groups (P>0.05). Training at 80% of one-repetition maximum (1RM) caused a slight decrease in the apoO concentrations. Moreover, apoO concentration was significantly higher in the 20% 1RM training group compared to other study groups (F=11.599, P<0.002).
Conclusion: Our results indicate that circuit resistance training at 80% of 1RM can decrease HDL-associated apoO level but does not significantly alter other parameters.

Abstract
Background and Objectives: Burns are a major global public health problem, accounting for an estimated 180,000 deaths annually. The majority of burn-related deaths occur in low- and middle-income countries. Considering the importance of treating infected burn wounds with the least adverse effects, we aimed to search the literature to find new treatments for infected wounds using medicinal plants.
Methods: The search process was carried out using various databases including Google Scholar, ScienceDirect, Web of Science, MEDLINE, PubMed, Scopus, and the Cochrane Library. We searched for relevant original and review articles (published in English or Persian) using the following keywords: herbal extract, herbal medicine, burn infection, and wound infection.
Results: Overall, we found approximately 100 articles related to the use of medicinal plants for treatment of wounds or infections. According to these studies, main constituents of plant extracts were carvacrol, flavonoids, terpenoids, phenolic diterpenes, and phenolic acids. Most studies assessed the antimicrobial activity by determining minimum inhibitory concentration and minimum bactericidal concentration using the disc diffusion method.
Conclusion: Given the favorable antimicrobial activity of medicinal plants, it is recommended to use them for treatment of burn wound infections.

Abstract
ABSTRACT
Background and Objectives: In this study, nanosilica modified with HS-SiO2 thiol groups was utilized as adsorbent for solid phase extraction, as a fast and reliable method of preconcentration and separation of very small quantities of selenium ions from water and blood samples.
Methods: The samples included four natural water samples and one biological sample (blood serum) prepared in volumes of 25, 100, 200, 300, 400 and 500 ml. The samples were analyzed by solid phase microextraction, using thiolated-nanosilica (as adsorbent), ultraviolet-visible spectrophotometry and atomic absorption spectroscopy.
Results: Optimized conditions for preconcentration of a 25 ml 0.2 mg/l selenium solution were pH 5, 40 mg of adsorbent, sample-adsorbent mixing time of 15 minutes and 5 ml of 2N sulfuric acid as detergent. The volume limit and concentration factor were 400 and 80, respectively. Limit of detection and relative standard deviation of the method were 0.46 μg/l and 0.9%, respectively.
Conclusion: This study is the first to successfully utilize thiolated nanosilica for measuring low selenium levels. Thiolation of the absorbent increases selenium adsorption by thiolated-silica compared to SiO2.

Background and Objectives: Coronary artery disease (CAD) is the leading cause of death worldwide. It is well established that low level of high-density lipoprotein-cholesterol (HDL-C) is a strong and independent risk factor for CAD. Apolipoprotein M (apoM) is a component of HDL, which is involved in pre-β-HDL formation and cholesterol efflux to HDL. It is believed that resistance and aerobic exercise can significantly reduce risk of cardiovascular disease, especially by increasing serum levels of HDL-C. However, little is known about effects of these activities on HDL-apoM levels. The aim of this study was to investigate effects of circuit resistance training at different intensities on HDL-associated apoM levels in young untrained men.
Methods: Forty-five age- and weight-matched healthy untrained men were randomly assigned to a control group (n=10) and four training groups: 20% 1-repetition maximum (1RM) (n=9), 40% 1RM (n=8), 60% 1RM (n=7) and 80% 1RM (n=8). The subjects performed circuit resistance training consisting of barbell bench press, underarm flab, seated barbell curl, triceps exercise with chains, lying leg curl, squats, hyperextension, abs workout, sit-ups and quadriceps workouts (30 seconds each) in three bouts without rest between stations and with active rest (3 minutes) between sets or bouts. The training protocol was carried out for 45 minutes per session, three sessions a week, for five weeks. Venous blood samples were taken 48 hours before the first exercise session and 48 hours after the last training session. After separating plasma, HDL-associated apoM was measured using commercial ELISA kits. SPSS 16 was used for analysis of data using two-way ANOVA and Tukey's post hoc test at significant level of 0.05.
Results: After the training intervention, the exercise groups had higher apoM levels in total HDL and HDL-2 compared to the control group (P>0.05). However, no significant difference in HDL-associated apoM level was observed between the study groups.
Conclusion: The results of this study indicate that various intensities of circuit resistance training can alter HDL-associated apoM levels. The decreased HDL-3-associated apoM level could indicate increased rate of apoM transfer to HDL-2, which could potentially prevent development of atherosclerosis and CAD by enhancing the antioxidant effects of HDL.

Abstract
Background and objectives: Aspergillosis is a widely distributed infectious disease, which is difficult to manage. According to recent studies, the prevalence of resistant Aspergillus fumigatus has increased from 3.3% to 6.6%. Acquired triazole resistance in Aspergillus species is an evolving global health challenge, which has made the control of diseases caused by Aspergillus a concern. This study was performed to investigate prevalence of azole resistance in Aspergillus isolates from environmental samples.
Methods: In this study, 316 soil samples were collected from three hospitals and a university campus in Gorgan (Iran) from July to September 2017. Two grams of each sample were suspended in 5 ml of 0.2M NaCl with 1% Tween 20. Then, 100 µl of the suspension was plated on sabouraud dextrose agar (SDA) supplemented with chloramphenicol, SDA supplemented with chloramphenicol and voriconazole (VOR, 1 mg/L) and SDA supplemented with chloramphenicol and itraconazole (ITC, 4 mg/L). The plates were incubated at 37 °C and examined for growth after 24, 48 and 72 hours.
Results: We detected Aspergillus fumigatus, Aspergillus flavus, Aspergillus niger and Aspergillus nidulans isolates in 187(59.2%), 84(26.6%), 147(46.5%) and 65(20.6%) samples, respectively. We found no VOR resistant isolate. However, 21 (25%) A. flavus and 16 (8.6%) A. fumigatus isolates were intermediate for VOR. In addition, seven (8.3%) A. flavus, 68 (36.4%) A. fumigatus, 41 (27.9%) A. niger and three (4.5%) A. nidulans isolates were resistant to ITC.
Conclusion: We were able to detect A.fumigatus, A. flavus, A. niger from all four sampling sites in Gorgan, North of Iran. A. fumigatus is the most prevalent and most resistant isolate in the studied area. History of previous agriculture activity and use of pesticides in the proximity of sampling sites may have affected the rate of ITC resistance.

Abstract
Background and objectives: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of octopine (phytogenic-derivative of arginine) on antioxidant indices, trace elements and lipid profiles of a mouse model of breast cancer.
Methods: In this study, 48 Balb/c mice were divided into six groups: healthy control, cancer control, cancer group receiving 50 mg of octopine, cancer group receiving 100 mg of octopine and cancer group receiving 150 mg of octopine. The octopine treatment was carried out for three weeks. The 4T1 cell line was used to induce cancer. Fasting blood samples were taken from mice to evaluate lipid profile, copper and zinc levels. Malondialdehyde, superoxide dismutase and glutathione peroxidase activity in breast tumor tissues was evaluated. Data were analyzed by SPSS 18 software using one-way ANOVA and t-test.
Results: Octopine had no significant effect on superoxide dismutase and glutathione peroxidase activity in the treatment group compared with the control cancer group. However, it significantly increased total antioxidant capacity and decreased malondialdehyde activities. Furthermore, treatment with octopine significantly decreased serum zinc, copper, TG, cholesterol and low-density lipoprotein levels but significantly increased high-density lipoprotein compared with the untreated cancer group.
Conclusion: Octopine administration is effective in reducing some oxidative stress indices and improving trace elements abnormalities and lipid profile in mouse models of breast cancer.
